Personal Message from Gijs:

We asked Gijs about his experience, the differences with the Netherlands, and if he has any tips for you! "My experience so far has been incredibly rewarding since deciding to play soccer and study in America. Balancing soccer and academics is going very well, and the level of play is higher than anticipated. Transitioning from Juco to D1 was an adjustment, everything is bigger, I play for a much larger school and matches requiring sometimes even flights for games away. The significant difference I've noticed compared to the Netherlands is possibility of combining high-level soccer with academics. For aspiring athletes considering this step, good research into your desired school is crucial. Being in the right place is essential for a fulfilling experience and continued personal growth.

Transfer from JUCO to D1 :

Gijs made a big step transferring from Coffeyville Community College to join the Bears in the Fall of 2023. His one season with the Red Ravens in Coffeyville, Kansas, showcased his prolific scoring ability, notching an impressive team-high of 12 goals from just 20 shots. Among his standout performances were a pair of hat tricks and three game-winning goals. Recognizing his excellence, Hovius earned a spot on the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Division I East All-Conference first team. Which earned him a transfer to NCAA D1 Missouri State University
