Field hockey scholarships

Are you a (international) field hockey player dreaming of playing in the USA?

American Universities offer great chances to study and play at the same time with field hockey scholarships.

We help you understand what they are, what they cover and how you can get one.

What Are Field Hockey Scholarships?

On this page, you already learned everything about playing college field hockey, but what about field hockey scholarships?

A field hockey scholarship is a financial contribution awarded to talented field hockey players to help reduce the costs of studying at a university in the USA.

For many international students, the idea of studying in the US is appealing, but the reality of university costs can be daunting. The total cost of attendance (tuition, housing, meals, etc.) can be up to $85,000 per year. Yes, that’s not a joke.

Field hockey scholarships in the USA therefore provide the opportunity for talented players to pursue their sport at a collegiate level while also receiving a quality education.

Field hockey divisions I, II and II

As you may know already, college field hockey is offered at the NCAA Division I, II and II level.
Each division has its own set of rules regarding field hockey scholarships and its limits.

Below an overview:

Division I

This is the top tier, where competition is fiercest. Teams in DI can offer up to 12 field hockey scholarships.

Given that the average roster size is around 25 players, not everyone will receive a full scholarship.

Division II

While some see it as a step down, DII is still competitive and DII schools can offer up to 6.3 field hockey scholarships per team.

This means that it's even more rare to receive a full scholarship, as these teams also have 25 players on their roster on average.

Division III

DII takes a different approach. Instead of athletic scholarships, they offer academic scholarships.

This means if you're looking to play field hockey in D3 you can still get financial aid based on your academic achievements.

Why are international players coming to the US to play college field hockey?

The attraction of America for international female hockey players, who choose to play hockey and study there, is due to a combination of unique opportunities offered by the American college system.

Where is college field hockey played?

College field hockey in the United States is primarily played in states along the East Coast, but it's also prevalent in other regions.

Which costs are covered with a field hockey scholarship?

While the idea of a full scholarship – where everything is covered – sounds appealing, they are rare due to the limited number of scholarships and the high number of talented players. Most athletes receive partial scholarships, which cover a portion of the costs.

Below is an overview of the costs that a field hockey scholarship can cover.

TUITION

Covers the costs of classes & fees and is often calculated per credit hour or semester.

HOUSING

Provides accommodations, such as a dorm room or off-campus housing.

MEALS

Offers a meal plan that includes a set number of meals per week, usable at campus cafeterias.

BOOKS

Helps cover the cost of textbooks and other required academic materials.

Insurances

Provides health insurance to cover medical needs during your studies & sport.

Academic scholarships

In addition to field hockey scholarships, you may also qualify for academic scholarships based on your GPA and SAT scores, or even receive need-based financial aid.

These academic scholarships can complement your athletic scholarship, potentially covering additional expenses and further reducing your financial burden.

Academic scholarships are contingent upon maintaining certain academic standards throughout your college tenure.
