Impact of U.S. Visa Pause on Student-Athletes
On May 27, 2025, the U.S. State Department announced an immediate pause on scheduling new F-1 student visa interviews. This measure is part of expanded social media vetting requirements and directly affects Dutch student-athletes preparing to study and compete in the United States.

What the New Policy Means
The U.S. government has temporarily halted new F-1 interview appointments to allow thorough screening of applicants’ public social media profiles. As a result, you won’t receive a confirmed interview date right now, but you can complete all preparation steps so you’re ready once appointments resume.
1. Current Wait Times and Expedited Requests
Wait times for F-1 visa interviews were already extended before this pause. We recommend submitting an expedited appointment request:
- File your DS-160 form and supporting documents (I-20, SEVIS payment receipt) as soon as possible.
- Request a priority interview through the online visa scheduling portal.
- As soon as consulates reopen booking, we will secure your interview slot immediately.
2. Optimizing Your Semester Preparation
Although your interview isn’t scheduled yet, you can fast-track your semester readiness:
- Monitor Deadlines: We track housing and orientation deadlines via your university portal.
- Organize Documents: We ensure all signed paperwork (I-20, acceptance letter) is complete and ready for travel booking.
- Engage in Pre-Arrival: We enroll you in online pre-arrival modules and webinars to familiarize yourself with campus life and academic requirements.
3. Social Media Vetting: Be Ready
Expanded vetting places extra emphasis on your online presence:
- We assist you in making your social media profiles public for review.
- Together, we remove or archive any sensitive content to mitigate risks.
- We save screenshots as proof of clean profiles.
4. Minimizing Denial Risks
While specific vetting criteria remain confidential, you can proactively reduce risks:
- Work with us to clean up old posts that could be flagged.
- Adjust privacy settings temporarily for transparency.
5. Preparing for OPT & Career Path
Delays in your study start could impact your OPT (Optional Practical Training):
- We coordinate with your university’s international office to file the I-765 OPT application immediately after your arrival.
- We monitor OPT and STEM-extension policy updates to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities.
